how to fly on a clear night

Choose a window seat, location determined by the likelihood of getting a moon bath. Once airborne, look for favorite constellations and familiar stars. Crane your neck at impossible angles in order to view them better. Explain your contortions to your seatmate, who may or may not be interested. Consider that doing such things makes you a card-carrying member of the eccentrically soulful 1% ~ the 1% that really matters. Celebrate your membership in this auspicious group by toasting Flannery O'Connor, she who once said, "You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you odd." Notice the moonlight illuminating first a river, then a lake, with silvery threads of light. Ooh and ahh appropriately. Begin to hum "Moon River", flowing right into "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" ~ quietly, though, since your seatmate is beginning to wonder about you. Sit back and breathe deep. Remember that you are winging through the air in a metal cylinder at about 500 mph, 30,000 feet above the ground. There is nothing ordinary about where you find yourself, so take time to savor this. And when the time comes to step off the plane, don't you dare forget it.

mind the gap

if you don't want to fall on the subway tracks in London
you will "mind the gap" by stepping carefully

if you don't wish to fly unexpectedly down the side of a mountain
you will "mind the gap" by staying on the trail and watching where you are going

if you'd like to remain upright while crossing the street
you will "mind the gap" by walking around potholes and noticing curbs

if you don't want to miss your life
you will "mind the gap" by remembering that not all gaps are created equal
that by listening carefully, when the time is right,
you might just hear the soft whispers of your ancestors
prodding you to jump right in
to practice the fine art of gap-minding
by sliding down a rabbit hole
of disappearing hand-holds and scrambled coordinates
where dogma dissolves in the holy void
of one breath ending and another beginning
the mind gapping exuberantly in the traveling temple
of the smiling three-day moon
free falling into up is down is in is out is

here
now
where your pilgrim heart cracks open to hear
first a buzz, then words kindly spoken:

hmmm . . . we were wondering when you were going to show up
welcome to possibility
now let's get to work!

si no quieres perder tu vida
empujándote a saltar

mmm . . . nos preguntábamos cuándo ibas a llegar
bienvenida a la posibilidad
ahora, a trabajar!

At the Vietnam Memorial

Freedom is not free
or so the slogan goes
yet shiny marble mirrors doubt
lost spirits wrenching souls

Let us now envelop you
Carnage from within
You'll not escape the torment
of the war we'll never win

No patriotic pabulum
can explain our names enshrined
nor reinvent the lies they spewed
nor tell us why we died

With deep respect for all veterans, especially those honored at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial

broken heart

simply, gently
she raises her hand to her mouth
palm facing outward
you will not feed me
nor will i drink anything
no more
no, no, no, no more

her memory
her life
her love
(she misses him so)
no more

brain flails and images fly
silken tendrils of a life
floating along on the nearest breeze
synapses fire wildly
entangled, losing their way
no more
broken heart steps in to remember
as she softly, surely fades
back into the arms of her beloved

corazon roto

sencillamente, suavemente
cubre su boca con la mano
palma afuera

enredadas, perdidas
no más
su corazón roto recuerda
y ella desaparece suavemente, seguramente
en los brazos de su amado

luna

she doesn't rally care
that you have posted a DANGER sign
your barbed wire simply serves
to make her more brash
confirming what she already knows
that reflecting light is a risky business
still
she dances with her lover and
illuminates the night
laughing
rising up and over
your ill-advised barriers
you can't keep a good woman down
or so they say
even as the critics taunt
don't you know your place?
you're a rock, for god's sake
a shiny rock, to be sure,
and maybe
(ok, we admit it)
a little mysterious
but still just a rock
who do you think you are?

rising slowly, deliberately
stopping people in their tracks
(look up! they exclaim)
she shines her reply

i am a rock
your rock
and i am a mirror
reflecting
refracting
pulling the tides and
igniting the passions
no fear of waning or dying or being born
again and again and again
I know who I am.
Do you?

luna

riendo
subiendo y cruzando
tus barreras desdichadas
no puedes oprimir a una mujer buena
(you can't keep a good woman down)
o eso dicen
mientras los críticos le hacen burla
no sabes tu lugar?
por dios, eres una piedra
una piedra brillante, seguramente,
y quizás
(ok, lo admitimos)
un poco misteriosa
pero solamente una piedra
quien crees que eres?

subiendo despacio, deliberadamente
deteniendo a la gente en su camino
(mira arriba! exclaman)
brilla su respuesta

soy una piedra
tu piedra
y soy un espejo
reflejando
refractando
jalando las mareas
y encendiendo las pasiones
sin miedo a menguar o morir o nacer
una y otra y una y otra vez
Yo sé quien soy.
¿Y tú?

free

i want to you to come over
to my apartment
not just to give me a ride
we need to have a tea party
you know, chit chat, visit
maybe play some games
you like games, right?

(but the chaos inside never stopped
and the tea party never was
because the deafening din
of the voices in his head
overwhelmed
waylaying a life
the promise of an artist
the dreams of a bright young man
chased down the rabbit hole
by the soul-grating cacophony
that never stopped)

have you ever read matthew i read it all the time jesus healed all sorts of people there were lepers and blind people and people with demons and its like this schizophrenia is a demon and i keep hoping i mean i wonder why can't i get healed like they did you know i cant have a family and nothing is normal because of this schizophrenia and i wonder why jesus cant heal me and would you like to buy one of my pictures just a couple of bucks so i can have some money because i cant work and i really hope you can help me and . . .

and . . .

I want you to come over
to my apartment
not just to give me a ride
we need to have a tea party
to celebrate
because the other night
the voices disappeared
just like that
quiet and peace
after waiting so long
jesus finally healed me and
let me rest
i got to rest
can you believe it?

i hope you can come
i won't even charge you
for the picture

In memory of our dear friend, Dean Henry Styner, who died suddenly last month.
We will never forget you.

libre

y . . .

quiero que vengas
a mi apartamento
no sólo para darme un aventón
necesitamos tener una merienda
para celebrar
pues la otra noche
desaparecieron las voces
así no más
quietud y paz
después de tanto esperar
jesús por fin me curó
y me dejó descansar

a harsh and dreadful thing

They held each other as though it were their last embrace on the Titanic, his body riddled with terminal cancer and her mind just starting to slip away, the first signs of memory loss becoming increasingly apparent to family and friends.  I will never forget how they held onto each other as they became acutely aware that their ship ~ the one they had maintained through 50 years of marriage ~ was truly sinking.  Their story line was pretty simple and hard to deny:  this was a nightmare.

Yet when I returned the following week, there they were, ready to explore their feelings about this terrible hand they'd been dealt.  We had a standing weekly appointment ~ usually it was just with him, but every so often she would be there, too.  He had always been in control as a physician, father, and community leader and being "the patient" did not come easily.  That the cancer had won (for that is how he viewed it) made him angry and very anxious.  He was skeptical when I first visited ~ pragmatic nursing visits he could understand, but this social work business seemed a bit silly to him.  Still, he kept inviting me back until it became clear that we were going to be Friday morning pals till the end.

We talked of many things, but mostly we searched for meaning:  Could there be any meaning in such a god-awful situation?  This being real life and not a Hallmark movie, there were no easy conclusions or pat answers.  But there were lots of questions, questions that hung in the air always.  He became thinner and more frail with each passing week, but inside he was entering realms that were previously unknown to him. He was still anxious and controlling, but in Hospice parlance, he was "doing his work"

Toward the end I asked him and his wife my usual question about possible meaning.  This time she didn't miss a beat:  "Oh, we got the chance to fall in love again!"

And did you get what
you wanted from this life, even so?
I did.
And what did you want?
To call myself beloved, to feel myself
beloved on the earth.

Considerarme amado, sentirme
amado en la tierra.
