It’s Saturday morning. I have all day to do whatever I want, something that has not happened in quite awhile. I sit down at the computer, ready to get some inspirational thoughts down. I have a serious theme in mind, and I have already written some loose ideas on a piece of non-virtual paper. I am ready. I am determined.
I am distracted . . . by my cat, who starts meowing mournfully because he wants to play his favorite game, Laser Pointer Tag. Now. (The laser pointer, by the way, is truly the best kitty toy ever). I cannot say no to those big green eyes, or to the claws that are mildly threatening my thighs.
A wild game of laser pointer tag with Drambuie Scott ensues. I laugh; he purrs, pounces, and slides all over the apartment ~ and since Saturday morning self-discipline is not my strong suit, kitty games lead to viewing cat videos on YouTube, via The Huffington Post. I am feeling mildly guilty about this, but not guilty enough to keep from posting one of them.
Remember MacGyver, the TV show from the 80’s in which our hero was continually getting himself out of scrapes by using his wits and, among other things, his ever-present Swiss Army knife and a roll of duct-tape? I didn’t have a TV at that time, but I was familiar with the show because of my students (They loved to quote him, especially: “If I just had some duct tape, I could fix that . . .”) and because I occasionally watched the show with friends. MacGyver was popular with peacenik types like me because he tended to use his brain instead of weapons to get himself out of his weekly scrapes ~ a rather entertaining model for (sort of) non-violent conflict resolution.
You might be wondering what MacGyver has to do with playing laser pointer tag with my cat. Ah, the great mysteries of lazy Saturday mornings! Well, take a look at this video featuring Steve McQueen (the cat) with the MacGyver theme, and I think you’ll understand.
And here’s hoping you get some free time this week just to mess around with cats ~ or whatever makes your heart sing. Now if I can just get Drambuie Scott to hang from a shelf like that . . .
Si tan sólo tuviera un poco de cinta gris y un puntero laser . . .
Es el sábado por la mañana. Tengo todo el día libre para hacer lo que quiera ~ hace mucho que no ocurre esto. Me siento enfrente de la computadora, lista para escribir. Tengo en la mente un tema serio, y ya he escrito unas ideas sueltas en una hoja de papel no-virtual. Estoy lista. Estoy determinada.
Estoy distraída . . . por mi gato que empieza a maullar tristemente porque quiere jugar su juego favorito, “la traes”/tag de puntero laser. Ahora mismo. (El puntero laser es el mejor juguete de gatos que jamás se ha inventado). No puedo resistir sus grandes ojos verdes, ni sus garras que ligeramente amenazan mis muslos.
Sigue un juego loco de laser pointer tag con Drambuie Scott. Yo río; él ronronea, salta, y se resbala por todo el apartamento ~ y ya que los sábados por la mañana la auto-disciplina no es mi fuerte, los jueguitos de gato me llevan a ver videos de gato en YouTube via The Huffington Post. Me siento un poco culpable por esto, pero no suficientemente como para no postear uno de ellos.
¿Te acuerdas de MacGyver, el programa de los 80's en que nuestro heroe se libera de las situaciones peligrosas por medio del ingenio y, entre otras cosas, su navaja suiza siempre presente y un rollo de cinta gris/duct tape? No tenía una tele en aquel tiempo, pero conocía el programa gracias a mis estudiantes (Les encantaba citarle, especialmente: “Si tan sólo tuviera un poco de cinta gris, podría componer esto. . . ”) y porque lo veía de vez en cuando con unos amigos. MacGyver fue popular con la gente “peacenik” (pacifista) como yo porque solía usar su cerebro en vez de las armas para escapar los peligros de cada semana ~ un modelo bastante divertido para (más o menos) la resolución de conflictos no-violenta.
Posiblemente te estás preguntando qué tiene que ver MacGyver con esto de jugar laser pointer tag con mi gato. Ah, los grandes misterios de las relajantes mañanas sabatinas! Pues, échale un vistazo a este video de Steve McQueen (el gato) con el tema de MacGyver, y creo que entenderás.
