MMXX

Earthrise, as seen from Apollo 8, December 24, 1968

These are the days of miracle and wonder.
This is the long distance call.
~ Paul Simon

The 20's roared in right on time
oh yes they did
just as the great, good Mother
was binding up her wounds.
She was in no mood to roar.
She quaked ~
softly at first ~
then groaned and trembled
in exhaustion,
labor-swaying as Corona crowned,
blood-soaking her children with a
cruel, mysterious offering:
You will stop now.
You WILL stop.

In fevered dreams an ice shelf cracked
and polar bears lazed on desert buttes,
melting in colors of flare and fire.
A little girl cried as she disappeared
under the foot of the massive border bridge
¡Por favor! Please! I want to live . . .

Sinking, sobbing.
Machines do the breathing now
and walls will keep you safe.

A man the color of night
begged for life and his mamma.
I can't breathe!
I can't breathe!
Soul force smothered
then arising, surging.
Bloodied with the great Mother's afterbirth
it soared and escaped,
wrapping the globe
in a messy mantle of improbable questions.

What is the sound of ignorance unbound?

The monk stands calmly in the zendo,
chanting as night descends.
Life and death are of supreme importance.
Time passes swiftly and opportunity is lost.
Let us awaken, awaken.
Do not squander your life

The 20's roared in right on time,
oh yes, they did,
with the great, good Mother pleading:
Stay.
Dream.
Fight.
A messy birth it is,
but a birth nonetheless.
Do not flee.

Do not squander your life.

MMXX

empezó a temblar ~
suavemente ~
luego gemía y estremecía
agotada,

Please! Quiero vivir . . .

Hundiéndose, llorando.
Ahora las máquinas respiran
y los muros te protegerán.

Un hombre, el color de la noche
rogaba por su vida y su mamá.
¡No puedo respirar!
¡No puedo respirar!
Fuerza de alma ahogada
luego surgiendo, despertando.

No derroches tu vida.

Lucha.
Un nacimiento caótico, sí,
pero sin embargo, un nacimiento.
No huyas.

No derroches tu vida.

signs

(Traducción al español a continuación)

These notes, written last summer, fell out of a binder as I was cleaning my house this morning:

Who would do such a thing?

Our beautiful magnolia trees are covered with graffiti ~ long, neon-orange stripes running down the trunks and along the ground. I am heartsick. Seriously, what is wrong with people?

I mumble some well-chosen expletives and bend down to look closer ~ planning how we might begin to clean this mess up ~ when I see the scene for what it is. It's not graffiti at all. It's the sun, glowing eerily orange through the branches, leaving reflections of fire that appear to have been spray painted. I have never seen anything like it. That's a phrase we're hearing a lot lately: We've never seen anything like it.

The West, you see, has been on fire, and smoky, other-worldly orange is the new color of sunlight. The air is so thick you can taste it, and in the morning there is a thin layer of ash on the cars. Decimated forests drifting down on the city, reminding us that something is terribly, terribly wrong.

Fast-forward a year. The earth ~ our Mother ~ continues to groan. May we listen deeply, moving through our fears so that we may wake up before it is too late. Our children are counting on us.

Jamás he visto algo semejante.
