thin places

Traducción al español a continuación

His previous life as a college professor shattered by an act of unspeakable violence, he now lives in the boiler room of an apartment building, digging through dumpsters for food and wandering the streets.  His life is harsh, and most would consider him to be mad.  Yet every afternoon at 5:00 he enters into another realm, where the pain and ugliness give way to consolation and transcendence as he watches her with love.  In the eyes of the world, she is awkward and dull.  To him, she is the lady whose love he hopes to win.

And because he believes in something so seemingly impossible, every day at 5:00, for just a few minutes, his world is transformed.

“Thin places,” the Celts call this space,

Both seen and unseen,
Where the door between this world
And the next is cracked open for a moment
And the light is not all on the other side.
God shaped space. Holy.

Some of them are famous, these so-called thin places where the veil that separates heaven and earth is permeable: The Scottish Island of Iona, Stonehenge, The Grand Canyon, Machu Picchu ~ places where people tend to perceive the divine in the midst of overwhelming natural beauty. Cathedrals and graveyards also rank high on the list of thin places.  And yet, they're not one size fits all ~ one person's thin place is another's distraction or annoyance. That cathedral that you found so moving may leave the person next to you utterly cold.

Sometimes thin places aren't places at all:  they are times or energies that draw us into mystery.  Birth, death, designated times of the year, such as Day of the Dead or the Solstices.  Or sleep . . .

I had been sitting there for a long, long time. I hated it. The seat was in the back of the bus, and for some reason the windows were blackened, making it impossible to see out. I was paralyzed, afraid to move, yet the painful longing for something more was slowly, almost imperceptibly, chipping away at my fear . . . until one day I got the nerve to get up and slowly start walking to the front of the bus. It was tentative at first ~ the "what-ifs" buzzing through my mind ~ but I tuned them out and inched forward with quiet confidence. Other passengers looked at me with horrified expressions: you're not allowed to go up there! But I no longer cared about the consequences ~ I only knew that I couldn't breathe back there in that oppressive, view-less seat ~ and by the time I got to the front of the bus, with its striking picture windows, I realized that nothing horrible had happened to me. On the contrary, I felt strong and hopeful for the first time in years; and having emerged from the darkness, I knew I didn't need to stay anymore. As I walked off the bus, I realized that I was free.

I dreamt that mystical bus ride more than 20 years ago, but I recall it as though it were yesterday. Dreams can be some of the most powerful thin places, sometimes giving us striking images for what is moving inside of us. They are nightly invitations to go deeper into the mystery. We often miss them because we are too distracted to remember them, or because they seem trivial. I honored and paid attention to this one, and it changed my life.

So there she was, sitting on a log with Jesus ~ yes, that Jesus. Although he was sitting next to her and their shoulders were touching, she was seated facing the other direction.  That's because she was furious at him.  A few months earlier she had been planning a new chapter in her life.  She'd been through some hard times and was finally getting her footing; as a Christian who prayed regularly and deeply, she felt that Jesus had put his stamp of approval on her plans.  Then she was diagnosed with Stage IV metatastic bone cancer, and just like that, the nightmare began.  Soon she developed an intestinal blockage that kept her from eating ~ particularly cruel since she was an organic farmer and gourmet cook. Since she wasn't ready to die yet ~ she had just a little bit of unfinished business with the Son of God ~ she requested artificial hydration so they could have some time to work things out.

And that's how she ended up on the log.  Looking away from Jesus, she was scarfing down a big bowl of buttered mashed potatoes ~ comfort food, she called it.  She wanted to be sure he saw what she had lost, and besides, it felt good to imagine the food she could no longer eat.

She called this a recurring vision, not a dream, but she couldn't really explain the difference.  She just knew that it was strikingly real to her, and she brought me up to date on her status with Jesus every time I visited.  They remained in that same awkward pose for nearly two months as she became progressively weaker.  He never left her.  In the end she put down the bowl of mashed potatoes and moved to the other side of the log, sitting alongside him, but never speaking to him.  Last I heard she was leaning over and looking up at him quizzically as they sat in silence.

She had a very peaceful death.

The Art of Disappearing

When they say Don't I know you?
say no.

When they invite you to the party
remember what parties are like
before answering.

Someone telling you in a loud voice
they once wrote a poem.
Greasy sausage balls on a paper plate.
Then reply.

If they say We should get together
say why?

It's not that you don't love them anymore.
You're trying to remember something
too important to forget.
Trees. The monastery bell at twilight.
Tell them you have a new project.
It will never be finished.

When someone recognizes you in a grocery store
nod briefly and become a cabbage.
When someone you haven't seen in ten years
appears at the door,
don't start singing him all your new songs.
You will never catch up.

Walk around feeling like a leaf.
Know you could tumble any second.
Then decide what to do with your time.

The Terry Gilliam film, The Fisher King, has been described as a modern day tale about the search for love, sanity, Ethel Merman, and the Holy Grail.  I ask you, how can you resist a movie with a lead-in like that? It has been one of my favorites since I first saw it in 1991, especially the Grand Central Station dance scene that appears at the beginning of this reflection. Like all good fairy tales, The Fisher King has a happy ending, but not before taking us on a wild ride filled with violence, mental illness, cruelty, forgiveness, redemption, and, perhaps most important, compassion.

The Fisher King
as told by Parry in the movie of the same name

Ever hear the story of The Fisher King?

It begins with the king as a boy, having to spend the night alone in the forest to prove his courage so he can become king. Now while he is spending the night alone he's visited by a sacred vision. Out of a fire appears the holy grail, symbol of God's divine grace. And a voice says to the boy, "You shall be keeper of the grail so that it may heal the hearts of men." But the boy was blinded by greater visions of a life filled with power and glory and beauty. And in this state of radical amazement he felt for a brief moment not like a boy, but invincible, like God; so he reached into the fire to take the grail, and it vanished, leaving him with his hand in the fire to be terribly wounded.

Now as this boy grew older, his wound grew deeper, until one day, life for him lost its reason. He had no faith in any man, not even himself. He couldn't love or feel loved. He was sick with experience. He began to die. One day a fool wandered into the castle and found the king alone. And being a fool, he was simple minded; he didn't see a king. He only saw a man alone and in pain. And he asked the king, "What ails you, friend?"

The king replied, "I'm thirsty. I need some water to cool my throat".

So the fool took a cup from beside his bed, filled it with water and handed it to the king. As the king began to drink, he realized his wound was healed. He looked in his hands and there was the holy grail, that which he sought all of his life. And he turned to the fool and said with amazement, "How could you find that which my brightest and bravest could not?"

And the fool replied, "I don't know. I only knew that you were thirsty."

It's good to remember that compassion, lived deeply, is quite possibly the most powerful thin place of all.

Thin Places

aparece a tu puerta
no empieces a cantarle todas tus nuevas canciones

Empezó a morir.

Get real

(Traducción al español a continuación)

One night a number of years ago, I accompanied some friends to a showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Some readers of this humble blog know what happened next: I was unwittingly “invited” to participate in the pre-movie show, and before I knew it, I was on stage in front of hundreds of people, participating in an Orgasm Faking Contest. That’s right: An Orgasm Faking Contest. The choice was to run off the stage or go for broke: I chose the latter. Imagine the performance at your own risk, but let me tell you: I took second place out of the three participants, and I would have won if they hadn’t had a cast member participating.

You might wonder why I would be bringing up such a thing. Well, it’s mostly because it’s almost Valentine’s Day and I want to post one of the great movie scenes of all time, from a movie that celebrates love, friendship, and the best faked orgasm in the history of filmmaking. I gave a respectable fake performance in front of a bunch of people, but I hereby bow to the master, Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally. Even if you’ve seen it a million times, it’s always worth another viewing:

Moving right along: I’ve always liked Valentine’s Day ~ not in its commercialized, romanticized form, but just as a special day to remember some of the folks who bring love and joy into our lives. And I like the chocolate. I’ve just never understood all the Valentine’s Day hype, the hype which tells us:

If you can just find that perfect someone, your life will be complete.

It’s such a silly message, but to be honest, it’s so damn seductive. I mean, really, if you’ve ever fallen crazy in love ~ with someone who feels the same for you ~ well, it doesn’t get a whole lot better this side of Heaven. I’m no curmudgeon when it comes to love and romance. But the older I get, the less patience I have with simplistic notions of love. We do ourselves a great disservice when we limit our ideas of love to romance, sex, and partnering up with the person of our dreams.

It’s common to hear people lamenting the lack of a romantic partner, dreading the horror of “ending up alone” ~ as though the only way to beat back loneliness is through a romantic relationship. I don’t buy it. Some of the loneliest times in my life came about when I was married or in a relationship. We only “end up alone” if we refuse to love. And love ~ real love, not the gussied up, romanticized version we hear so much about on Valentine’s Day ~ only happens when we set aside the illusions and allow ourselves to be open, to take risks in order to connect with others and be a part of their lives. In short, we have to allow ourselves to be vulnerable once in awhile, or as the skin horse puts it in the lovely children’s book, The Velveteen Rabbit, we have to become real.

What is REAL?" asked the rabbit one day . . .

"Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but really loves you, then you become real."

"Does it hurt?" asked the rabbit.

"Sometimes,” said the skin horse. For he was always truthful. "When you are real you don't mind being hurt."

"Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?"

"It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get all loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

Love is such a deliciously messy business. So whether your Valentine is a lover, a friend, your children, a big yellow cat named Drambuie Scott . . .

or all of the above, I hope you find yourself becoming real on this Valentine’s Day ~ well-loved and loving well ~ and looking a little more shabby because of it.

Get real
